Why Visit Fogo

Fogo is unlike any other island in Cabo Verde. Shaped by its volcano, black lava covers the ground, the air thins as the land rises, and the ocean stays in view from high above.

São Filipe moves at an unhurried pace. Spend time walking the colorful streets, learning about Fogo’s history, and watching daily life unfold in markets, cafés, and along the main squares. In the village of Chã das Caldeiras, life continues among old lava flows inside the volcano’s caldera. You pass vineyards growing straight from volcanic rock, stop to taste local wine and cheese made nearby, and stay in traditional Fogo homes built from volcanic stone.

In the island's heart is Pico do Fogo, the country’s highest point and an active volcano you can actually hike. The hike is challenging but steady, with long views and a real sense of being inside the landscape. Beyond the towns, the island opens up through quiet roads, lava fields, small villages, and black-sand beaches. You tour the island by car, stopping often, taking in the changes in terrain, and spending time outdoors. Spend a night in a private bungalow at an eco-lodge, surrounded by nature, where evenings are quiet and mornings start with open views and fresh air.
